New 48-Hour Forecast Schedule

medium_9661431073After some consideration and thought I’ve decided that the 48-hour forecasts for the Hudson Valley will be put on a more consistent schedule instead of the current “free-form” approach. The quick version of the new schedule is this:

Forecasts will be issued at the following times each week:

[one_fourth] | Sunday Evening | [/one_fourth][one_fourth] | Tuesday Morning | [/one_fourth][one_fourth] | Wednesday Evening | [/one_fourth][one_fourth_last] | Friday Evening | [/one_fourth_last]

The longer explaination of this new schedule:

The reason I have chosen these days is so that I can get consistent coverage of the entire week without extending the length of any individual forecast and without pushing a new forecast out every single day. In addition to this site I also work a full-time job during the day. I want to ensure that I continue to bring quality weather information to the community without burning myself out.

So the breakdown of why these times/days were chosen comes down to this: Each 48-hour forecast contains four 12-hour periods (7am-7pm and 7pm-7am EDT). A PM forecast begins with the period 7pm – 7am for the day that it is issued, and the AM forecast begins with the 7am – 7pm period on the day of issue. Thus the Sunday PM forecast will start with the overnight weather from 7pm Sunday night through 7am Monday morning. The final period of the forecast issued on Sunday PM would be for Tuesday 7am through 7pm. With that understood, here’s the setup:

[one_fourth] | Sunday Evening | [/one_fourth][one_fourth] | Tuesday Morning | [/one_fourth][one_fourth] | Wednesday Evening | [/one_fourth][one_fourth_last] | Friday Evening | [/one_fourth_last]

[one_fourth]Sun PM[/one_fourth][one_fourth]Tue AM[/one_fourth][one_fourth]Wed PM[/one_fourth][one_fourth_last]Fri PM[/one_fourth_last]

[one_fourth]Mon AM[/one_fourth][one_fourth]Tue PM[/one_fourth][one_fourth]Thu AM[/one_fourth][one_fourth_last]Sat AM[/one_fourth_last]

[one_fourth]Mon PM[/one_fourth][one_fourth]Wed AM[/one_fourth][one_fourth]Thu PM[/one_fourth][one_fourth_last]Sat PM[/one_fourth_last]

[one_fourth]Tue AM[/one_fourth][one_fourth]Wed PM[/one_fourth][one_fourth]Fri AM[/one_fourth][one_fourth_last]Sun AM[/one_fourth_last]

As you can see from the above table, each AM/PM forecast period for all seven days of the week is touched on at least once. This ensures that there are no gaps in forecast coverage and also allows me to put out fresh forecasts on the important days of the week. The Sunday issue will highlight weather conditions for the beginning of the week. The Tuesday and Wednesday forecasts help keep users up-to-date with the most recent weather developments during the typical work week. Then finally, the Friday forecast gives users insight into expected weather conditions over the weekend. And the process repeats from there.

At this point I am offering the 48-hour forecast for Poughkeepsie, NY free-of-charge on this site. Coming soon I will be unveiling a new product that users can subscribe to, for a monthly fee, which will provide a 48-hour forecast based on a personalized location (nearest Automated Surface/Sensor/Weather Observation Station to the user’s city or zipcode).

In the meantime I would love to hear your feedback on whether this new schedule makes sense, or any other suggestions you may have. Leave a comment here or email me at amshackelford (at) austinsatmosphere (dot) com
